Hike From Lake Sabrina to Blue Lake

The Sierra Nevada mountains west of the town of Bishop, California offer many opportunities for hiking so the second hike on this year’s Sierra Club trip enabled us to see different alpine lakes in glacial basins surrounded by different granite cliffs and mountain peaks. Once again we were treated to remarkable scenery along our journey.

After passing through Bishop we went about 18 miles west to Lake Sabrina which is at an elevation of 9,070 feet. The lake is popular for fishing and has a small boat ramp.

The first general manager of the Nevada California Power Company, which dammed the lake during 1907-1908, was Charles M. Hobbs and the lake was named for his wife, Sabrina Hobbs.

With the above average snow pack this year the water level of the lake was high. In the distance are the White Mountains.

From the dam outlet the water was roaring down the Middle Fork of Bishop Creek.

The hike started on the east side of the lake and goes along it before starting to climb.

After a little hiking more of Lake Sabrina can now be seen.

There were a few stream crossings along the way.

The trees became less and the mountains more rugged as we went up.

And Lake Sabrina appears smaller.

We did not see a lot of wildflowers on this hike but we did see these Mountain Pride (Penstemon newberryi).

Sticking up behind the foreground mountains are the Piute Crags.

We continue to climb.

The Piute Crags on the left, Lake Sabrina below, and the Owens Valley and White Mountains beyond.

When we neared our destination lake the trail made a rocky ascent.

Finally we can see a little of Blue Lake with the mighty Thompson Ridge behind.

We went to the middle of the western side of Blue Lake and this is a view back toward the outlet.

A panorama of the mountains on the eastern side of the lake. Blue Lake is at an elevation of 10,400 feet.

There were some flowers near the edge of the lake.

We enjoyed our lunch by the side of Blue Lake before heading back the way we came. On this hike we began at one beautiful lake going to a second one with stunning mountain scenery along the way.
