Sights Around ComicCon 2022

Comic-Con returned to San Diego in July 2022 with the first in person convention since 2019. The convention is very popular and has a lot more people wanting to attend than Comic-Con can accommodate so they have a ticket lottery. I was able to score tickets in the lottery for three of the four days of the next convention which were held over to this year. So with tickets in hand I set out to see what all Comic-Con 2022 has to offer.

I usually take the Trolley light rail service part way because parking in downtown San Diego is expensive and can be some distance from the Convention Center where Comic-Con takes place. The Trolley is inexpensive and has a stop right in front of the Convention Center. Some of the trolley cars have Comic-Con related wraps. This Trolley had one for the Abbott Elementary TV show which is returning for its second season this fall.

Stepping off the trolley I was immediately greeted by some sand sculptures. There are Comic-Con displays and events outside the Convention Center area some of which like these are open to the public. The sand creations were done by the world-class Sand Masters artists. This one was promoting Audible’s Sandman audio book.

Another one was for the Audible original Impact Winter.

Because of all the people some streets near the Convention Center are blocked or partially blocked off.

Some buildings also have wraps like this one promoting Amazon Prime’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series.

Here are wraps for Teen Wolf: The Movie and The Walking Dead TV show.

The Rookie and it’s spin-off The Rookie: Feds TV shows took advantage of Petco Park baseball stadium’s architecture.

There was a photo opportunity with an alien from the TV show Resident Alien.

Another photo opportunity was to disappear into the Quantum Leap Accelerator from the TV show’s reboot.

Now it is time to enter the ticket only area of the Convention Center. Comic-Con was following fairly strict COVID-19 protocols. The requirements were to either have proof of  negative test results within the past 72 hours or having shots. Masks were required to be worn.

The Convention Center has interesting architecture as seen here from a picture taken on the escalator to the second floor.

What’s the universe coming to when Storm Troopers are relegated to directing people where to go.

On the second floor I stepped outside and found some knight in shining armor cosplay.

An everything Star Trek building wrap. On the left are some coverings for people standing in line for one of the rooms inside. However there were just a few people taking a break when I took this picture.

View of the Waterfront and San Diego Bay.

The boat in the center is a pirate ship. Just the sails can be seen in the previous picture.

One never knows what they will see floating in the bay during Comic-Con.

Or in the sky.

In the exhibit hall there were statues of characters from Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter movies.

NASA had a booth promoting the Artemis mission.

Comic-Con has many panels one can attend. This was for the Ghosts TV show returning for its second season this fall.

Luckily they provided a slide telling who all the people were.

There was also this panel for the new series Vampire Academy premiering this fall. The panel included the showrunners and and some of the cast. Some clips from the show were shown. One tidbit I found interesting was the filming location was Spain.

So ends another year at San Diego Comic-Con. They were able to have the things I enjoy seeing as well as a few new things. I do not know when I will get tickets again so will savor the experience.
