Fun in the Snow at Big Bear

The past few years there has not been snow during our visits to Big Bear, California. Finally this past December we found snow, not a lot, but enough that we and lots of other people could have fun in the snow.

There was a few inches of snow on the ground around Big Bear Lake though the snow was mostly gone on the South facing hills on the other side of the lake.

In Boulder Bay some people were checking out the lake on the pier used for fishing other times of the year. The ice was very thin.

Some people walked to what is an island when the lake level is higher.

These people were enjoying a short tobogganing run.

Others found more of a hill and a longer run.

These ducks seemed oblivious to all the activity going on around them.

The ski slopes at the Snow Summit ski area were busy.

Lots of people going up the slopes and coming down.

My nephew Nathan took this picture from the top of a ski slope. This picture was taken in the morning with a bright blue sky.

Nathan took this picture in the afternoon after clouds moved in.

These are some of the snow making equipment used to supplement the snow when there is not enough snow fall to keep the slopes sufficiently covered.

Some of the equipment used to groom the ski slopes.

The Snow Summit ski slopes are lit for night skiing.

The next day we went for a walk along part of Big Bear Lake. This is what the Snow Summit ski slopes look like in the day.

Looking to the West in the direction of the outlet of the lake. If you look closely there are others walking along the lake.

Another view of the Snow Summit ski slopes. On the hill rising to the left a little of the ski slopes is visible of Bear Mountain which is the other ski area at Big Bear.

The trees make a nice frame of the view.

We spotted an Osprey high in a tree near the lake. Also a closer view with a telephoto lens.
