Journey to the Point Fermin Lighthouse

The Point Fermin Lighthouse located in San Pedro, California is a nice place to visit with an interesting structure which is surrounded by a park. We decided to get a little exercise by hiking along the beach in route to the lighthouse.

We parked our car and set off hiking in the direction of the lighthouse.

Before rounding the bluff we took a look back to our starting point and the beach beyond it.

Continuing on we found some rocky beaches. The lighthouse is on the distant peninsula but with the morning fog can not yet be seen.

We were there near low tide and there were quite a few tide pools. We checked a few out but did not see a lot.

This is looking back the way we came. This hike should be done around low tide as there are a few places where there are not very good places to walk at high tide.

A closer view of the peninsula. Just the very top of the lighthouse can be seen (to the right of the single palm tree). At this point we hiked on a path we found up to the level of the lighthouse.

These are some interesting trees we saw.

From the top the view of the peninsula with the fog slowly disappearing inland.

A little more of the top of the lighthouse can be seen. Also one gull in the sky with another that is hard to see with the ocean behind it.

The cliffs are very shear.

Once again looking back the way we came.

Finally a view of the lighthouse and the nearby buildings.

The Point Fermin Lighthouse was built in 1874 and was the first navigational light into the San Pedro Bay. The light was used until 1941 when after the Pearl Harbor attack the light along with the rest of the coast was blacked out. The light was never lit again.

The Point Fermin Lighthouse was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on June 13, 1972.

In 2002 the lighthouse was restored and opened to the public in 2003.

The large tree to the right of the lighthouse is a Moretin Bay Fig. These trees were planted here in the 1930s.

Surrounding the lighthouse is the Point Fermin Park which would be a good place to have a picnic or just relax.

One last view of the lighthouse before returning to our car where we went by route of the sidewalks.
