Views Along the Mamie Woods Trail
There are many lakes in the vicinity of Mammoth Lakes, California some of which I have seen on various hikes. One of the lakes I have never checked out is Lake Mamie even though I have stopped at some nearby scenic overlooks. So on this July 2026 Mammoth Lakes trip I decided to rectify this.
Lake Mamie is located just outside of the town of Mammoth Lakes along Lake Mary Road. The bridge which crosses over the the outflow of Lake Mamie makes for a good place to take a picture of Lake Mamie.
The trailhead of the Mamie Woods Trail is just to the right. This trail was opened in October 2022 so is relatively new. The trail is only 0.6 miles long so is fairly short.
Most of Lake Mamie is surrounded by forest which can make taking pictures a bit of a challenge.
However every so often there is enough of a break in the trees where there are views of the lake. In the next series of pictures the first is the direction of the way I came and the second the direction I’m going.
Fishing is popular at Lake Mamie and I saw some anglers trying their luck along the shore.
Lake Mamie is the smallest of the five lakes in the Mammoth Lakes Basin. Horseshoe Lake is to the right of it, Lake Mary feeds into it, Lake George is above it, and Twin Lakes are below it.
In just a short distance more of the distant mountains could be seen.
There were a number of people paddling around. Lake Mamie is fairly shallow around 8 to 10 feet or so at its deeper points. Swimming is not allowed in the lake.
There were nice views of the granite mountain peaks. The Mamie Woods Trail runs into the Horseshoe Woods Trail. It would be possible to do a loop going in either direction on this trail. However because of time constraints I returned the way I came on the Mamie Woods Trail.
On this day it was clearer than it has been in recent years and there were interesting clouds so I had to take some pictures at the two nearby scenic overlooks. The first is called Twin Lakes Vista Point and the lakes are Twin Lakes. To confuse things there is the Twin Lakes Vista scenic viewpoint which is located at the distant end of the lakes.
This shows more of the nearer lake and the distant mountains.
Moving on to the second viewpoint called Twin Lakes Falls Overlook which is a short distance on the bike path and is by the outflow of Lake Mamie. Twin Lakes has three bodies of water separated by short narrow waterways.
For comparison the second picture was taken here in September 2014. While the scenic view is a little different, the lakes and their surroundings are very much the same.
Also in 2014 I took zoom pictures for closer looks at both ends of the lakes.
There is a picnic area near this overlook where I climbed a short hill for one last look at Lake Mamie. The rock mountain sticking up in the middle of the picture is Crystal Crag.
The Mamie Woods Trail makes for a short and relatively easy hike with places where beautiful lake and mountain scenery can be viewed. The other four lakes in the Mammoth Lakes Basin are close by and are also worth checking out.
