Orchids and Other Flowers at the Flower Fields
The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch located in Carlsbad, California are famous for their 50 acres of fields planted with ranunculus flowers which bloom for a few weeks every spring. I showcased these flowers previously in the Flower Fields post. However there are other kinds beautiful flowers at the Flower Fields. Like many other things the Flower Fields is closed to the public at the time this post was written due to COVID-19 but you can still enjoy seeing the flowers from pictures I took a few years ago.
The Flower Fields has a greenhouse which was filled with Cymbidium orchids that were in bloom when I visited.
The Cymbidium orchids are the easiest orchid to grow and bloom. The long spikes of colorful flowers can last for 6 weeks or more. The flowers are popular for use in flower arrangements and corsages.
Their natural habitat is in the tropical highlands of Asia and North-Australia.
The first record of Cymbidium cultivation dates back to China in 400 BC.
The Flower Fields Cymbidiums are grown from seed and take 6 years to grow to maturity.
Cymbidiums color range includes white, green, cream, yellow, pink, rose, and red orange.
Near the greenhouse are flower beds with seasonal flowers.
These can include delphiniums, geraniums, poppies and other flowers.
Careful, this planter box of succulents contains a mosaiculture alligator.
Maybe this is best approached from the other side.
Close views of delphiniums.
And more delphiniums in various stages of bloom.
The flowers make this an appropriate post for Mother’s Day which is today. When I was at the grocery store this morning there was a long line of people buying flowers.
Be sure to check out my Flower Fields post which showcased the ranunculus flowers.
